Charging cables with a Type 2 plug

Type 2 (also called Mennekes) is the European standard for electric cars and plug-in hybrids, from the Volkswagen ID.3 and Tesla Model 3 to the Renault Zoe and Peugeot e-208.

You recognise the Type 2 plug by seven pins in a round socket with a flat top. A Type 2 charging cable has the same plug at both ends. While charging, the car and the station lock the plug themselves.

The power you need depends on how many phases your car uses. The number plate check shows which cable fits.

  • Single-phase: 3.7 or 7.4 kW
  • Three-phase: 11 or 22 kW
  • From 3 to 20 metres, straight or coiled

Which Type 2 charging cable fits your car?

Almost every electric car in Europe has a Type 2 inlet. The difference is how much power your car can take. So you choose the cable on two points: the number of phases and the current in amps. With the number plate check you don't have to work this out yourself: you only see the cables that fit your car.

Single-phase or three-phase charging

A single-phase cable charges at 3.7 kW (16A) or 7.4 kW (32A). A three-phase cable charges at 11 kW (16A) or 22 kW (32A). How fast you actually charge depends on what your car and the charging station can handle: the lower of the two sets the speed. If your car charges on a single phase, it charges just as fast with a three-phase cable as with a single-phase one.

Which length do you need?

At your own charging station, 5 metres is usually enough. If you often charge at public stations, or park further from the post, choose a longer cable. The longer the cable, the heavier it is and the more boot space it takes up.

Straight or coiled?

A straight charging cable is light and easy to roll up, but lies on the ground while charging. A coiled (spiral) cable pulls itself together, stays cleaner and gets in the way less.

Charging cable or portable charger?

You use a Type 2 charging cable at a charging station. To charge from a regular wall socket, you need a portable charger: it has the protection built in.

Questions about Type 2 charging cables

What is a Type 2 charging cable?

A charging cable with a Type 2 plug on both ends. That's the standard for charging stations and electric cars in Europe.

Is Mennekes the same as Type 2?

Yes. Mennekes is the company that designed the Type 2 plug. That's why both names are used.

What's the difference between single-phase and three-phase charging?

Single-phase charging goes up to 7.4 kW, three-phase up to 22 kW. You never charge faster than your car or the charging station allows.

Can I use a three-phase cable if my car charges on a single phase?

Yes. The cable works fine; your car simply charges at its own maximum.

Which cable length do I need?

At your own charging station, 5 metres is usually enough. For public stations or if you park further from the post, a longer cable is handier.

Will the charging cable fit my car?

Use the number plate check: you only see the cables that fit your car.
