Which charging cable do I need?

Type 1 or Type 2? Single phase or three? And how long? That depends on your car. With the number plate check you don’t have to work it out yourself: you only see the charging cables that fit your car. That goes for electric cars and plug-in hybrids alike.

Type 1 or Type 2 charging cable

Almost every electric car in Europe has a Type 2 inlet (also called Mennekes). You recognise it by seven pins in a round socket with a flat top. Type 1 has five pins in a round socket and is mainly found on older cars and plug-in hybrids, such as the first Nissan Leaf (up to 2017) and older Mitsubishi Outlander PHEVs. Rather not check yourself? The number plate check shows which inlet your car has.

See the Type 2 charging cables or the Type 1 charging cables.

Single-phase or three-phase charging

A single-phase cable charges at 3.7 kW (16A) or 7.4 kW (32A). A three-phase cable charges at 11 kW (16A) or 22 kW (32A). How fast you actually charge is set by the weakest link: your car, the charging station or the cable. If your car charges on one phase, a three-phase cable charges it just as fast as a single-phase one.

Which cable length do you need?

At your own charging station, 5 metres is usually enough. If you often charge at public stations or park further away, choose 8 or 10 metres. Longer than 10 metres only makes sense if there is no other way: a long cable is heavier and takes up more space in the boot. We have charging cables from 3 to 20 metres.

Straight or coiled?

A straight charging cable is light and easy to roll up, but lies on the ground while charging. A coiled charging cable pulls itself back together, stays cleaner and is less in the way.

Charging cable or portable charger?

You use a charging cable at a charging station. To charge from a regular socket, you need a portable charger: it has the built-in protection that keeps your car and your home wiring safe.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which charging cable do I need? +

That depends on your car’s inlet (Type 1 or Type 2), how many phases it uses and the length you want. The number plate check shows only the cables that fit your car.

Do I need a Type 1 or Type 2 charging cable? +

Almost always Type 2: that is the standard in Europe. Type 1 is mainly found on older cars and plug-in hybrids. Not sure? Use the number plate check.

Can I charge from a regular socket with a charging cable? +

No. A charging cable connects to a charging station. For a regular socket you need a portable charger with built-in protection.

Does a plug-in hybrid need a different charging cable? +

No, a hybrid uses the same plugs: usually Type 2, Type 1 on older models. Many hybrids charge on one phase, so a single-phase cable is often enough. The number plate check shows what your car needs.

Can I use a 22 kW charging cable on an 11 kW charging station? +

Yes. You then charge at up to 11 kW, or less if your car can’t take more.

Which cable length is most practical? +

At your own charging station, 5 metres is usually enough. For public stations or if you park further away, 8 or 10 metres is more practical.

Can I run a charging cable across the pavement? +

That is up to your local council. Many don’t allow it, or only with a cable cover, because pedestrians can trip over it. Check with your council before you lay the cable.

What does a charging cable cost? +

That depends on power and length: a three-phase cable of 10 metres costs more than a single-phase cable of 5 metres. You see the current price with each cable above.
