What is a portable charger?

A portable charger (also called a granny charger) is a charging cable with a control box that contains the protection. It lets you charge your car from a regular wall socket or from three-phase power (CEE), with no charging station and no installation. Handy if you don't have a charger at home, on holiday, or as a backup in the car.

Charging cable or portable charger?

People often mix them up. A charging cable is only for use at a charging station: it has no protection of its own. To charge from a wall socket, you need a portable charger. Does the cable have a control box and a plug for a wall socket? Then it's a portable charger.

Wall socket or three-phase?

From a regular wall socket you charge at up to 3.7 kW, usually at 2.3 kW. With a three-phase charger on a red CEE socket you charge on three phases: 11 kW at 16A, up to 22 kW at 32A, if your car can take it. A blue camping socket is single-phase, like a wall socket.

How fast do you charge from a wall socket?

At 2.3 kW you add around 20 kWh in a 10-hour night: enough for about 100 km. If you don't drive more than that per day, a portable charger works fine for everyday use. If you drive more, or want to charge faster, look at a home charging station.

Charging safely from a wall socket

Use a socket in good condition, preferably on its own circuit. If you charge for hours, choose a lower charging level: on most models you set it yourself. If you need an extension cable, use a heavy-duty extension cable (3×2.5 mm²) and fully unwind a cable reel. Charging outdoors? Use a socket that's suitable for outdoor use.

Type 1 or Type 2?

Almost every electric car in Europe has a Type 2 inlet: then you need a Type 2 portable charger. Type 1 is mainly found on older cars and plug-in hybrids, such as the first Nissan Leaf: that's what the Type 1 portable charger is for. The number plate check shows which inlet your car has.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I charge my electric car from a regular wall socket? +

Yes, with a portable charger. The control box in the cable provides the protection. A regular charging cable can't do this.

How fast does a portable charger charge? +

From a regular socket usually at 2.3 kW, at most 3.7 kW. With a three-phase charger at 11 kW, or up to 22 kW at 32A. Your car never charges faster than its on-board charger allows.

Can I use an extension cable? +

Better not, but if you must: use a heavy-duty cable (3×2.5 mm²), fully unwind a cable reel and choose a lower charging level. A thin or coiled cable heats up.

Can I charge at a campsite with a portable charger? +

Yes. Ask first whether it's allowed and choose a low charging level: campsites often have a limited supply. A blue CEE socket is single-phase, like a wall socket.

Is a portable charger safe? +

Yes, if you use it properly. The control box monitors things like leakage current and temperature and stops charging if there's a problem. Use a socket in good condition.

Portable charger or home charging station? +

A portable charger is flexible and needs no installation, but charges more slowly from a wall socket. A home charging station is fixed to your house and charges faster. Many drivers start with a portable charger and keep it as a backup later.

Does a portable charger work with a plug-in hybrid? +

Yes. A hybrid has a smaller battery and often charges fully from a wall socket in a few hours. The number plate check shows which portable charger fits.

Can I set how much power the charger uses? +

On most models, yes: the charging levels let you choose how much current the charger draws. Handy with an older installation, at a campsite or when other appliances share the same circuit.
