Everything you need to know about EV charging cables

What is a charging cable for your electric car?

A charging cable is the connection between your electric car and a charging point, such as a Charging station, wall charger or mobile charger. The right cable ensures that you can charge safely, quickly and efficiently - at home, at work or on the road.

Two types of charging cables are used in Europe, depending on the connection to the vehicle side:

  • Type 1: For older electric cars and many Asian plug-in hybrids, such as the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV or Nissan Leaf (first generation).
  • Type 2.: The European standard for almost all modern electric cars and plug-in hybrids, such as Tesla, BMW, Volkswagen and Volvo.

The Type designation therefore always refers to the connection on the car side. The other side - towards the charging point - is almost always a Type 2 connection (Mennekes).

At EV Plug you will find a wide range of charging cables, suitable for 1-phase and 3-phase charging, in various lengths from 3 to 15 meters. All our cables are weatherproof, CE approved and ready for intensive daily use.

  • For all EVs and PHEVs with Type 1 or Type 2 connection.
  • Charging capacities from 3.7 to 22 kW
  • Splash-proof (IP65), UV-resistant and flexible
  • Lengths available from 2 to 15 meters

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a charging cable and why do I need one?

A charging cable forms the connection between your electric car and a charging point, such as a public charging station, wallbox or mobile charger. The right cable ensures safe and efficient charging. You need a loose charging cable at Charging stations without a fixed cable.

What is the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 charging cables?

  • Type 1: 5 pins + locking tab, used on older EVs and Asian plug-in hybrids (e.g. Mitsubishi Outlander, Nissan Leaf 1st gen).
  • Type 2: 7 pins without flap, standard in Europe for almost all modern electric cars (e.g. Tesla, VW, Renault, Peugeot).
The Type designation always refers to the car side of the cable.

How do I know which cable I need?

Check what type of connection your car has (Type 1 or Type 2). In addition, check if your car supports 1-phase or 3-phase charging, and choose a cable length that fits your charging location. In doubt? Then use our Choices tool to find suitable products for your car.

What is the difference between 1-phase and 3-phase charging?

1-phase charging is suitable for cars with limited charging power (up to 7.4 kW). 3-phase charging allows higher speeds (up to 11 or 22 kW). You need a 3-phase connection and a charging cable that supports 3-phase charging.

In what lengths are charging cables available?

Our charging cables are available in lengths up to 15 meters. The most commonly chosen length is 5 meters. Shorter cables are useful for fixed charging spots, longer cables give more flexibility for larger driveways or public charging stations.

Can I use a charging cable outside?

Yes, all our charging cables are splash-proof (IP54 or IP65) and resistant to UV radiation. They are designed for everyday use, even in rain or cold. Do not leave the plugs on the ground after use to avoid dirt and damage.

Does a Type 2 Charging cable fit all Charging stations?

Yes. In Europe, almost all public charging stations and wallboxes have a Type 2 connection on the charging station side. So you only have to pay attention to the type of connection on the car side (Type 1 or Type 2).
